Artist: Maria Lassnig
Maria Lassnig (1919–2014) was an Austrian painter known for her pioneering work in body awareness and self-representation. She developed the concept of “body awareness painting,” where she focused on depicting the sensations of her own body rather than its external appearance. Lassnig’s expressive, often unsettling works explore themes of identity, vulnerability, and the human condition. Her contributions to art earned her widespread recognition, including becoming the first female artist to receive the Grand Austrian State Prize.
