about me

Lanell Dike

c.j. grossman told me, “You are an artist,” and she changed my life. This was in 2008. At the time I was a fundraiser and manager at the Global Fund for Women in San Francisco. I didn’t know much about art. I didn’t draw, paint or sculpt. I wrote in my journal, I took photographs, I made photo collage books.

But there was already a tendril of this new direction unfurling. Months earlier, I had experienced an interactive art exhibit for the first time – a video installation by Susana Aragón. In her piece, I wrapped a white sheet around myself and became a projection screen, watching images playing on my body. I turned into a shoreline, waves rhythmically lapping…coming in, going out.

I thought about that art piece for days. I could close my eyes and feel my body as the tide. When c.j. said, “You are an artist,” everything in me responded, “Yes! I want that!” I want to be able to communicate and connect through felt senses.

Since then, art has taken over my life. I love the endlessness of discovery, the holes poked into my certainties, the tenderness of raw revealing, and the challenge of opposites, always together and separate.

Art is personal and sometimes scary, but with Lanell’s encouragement and pressure free classes I have been able to explore my personal journey in becoming an artist.

about the name

Listen, Delicious

I didn’t come up with the name. Years ago I turned my apartment in Oakland into a weekend pop-up art gallery named Frisbie St. I was a brand new, just born artist at 36, hopping with ideas, energy and passion.

I wanted to show my art and connect with other artists. I needed a space so I used what I had. I moved all my furniture into the backyard for the first art show and then started giving it all away, until I was sleeping on the floor.

The space was emptying to be filled. Frisbie St. unfurled – a creation I can only take partial credit for. Strangers became friends. A community was created of people who wanted art in their lives.

I don’t remember when or how the gift of Listen, Delicious arrived. Were the words scribbled on a mailing list sign-up sheet during one of our weekend shows? Or left behind on a scrap of paper after one of the art workshops? I guess it doesn’t matter. All I know, is that I found these words, “Listen delicious, give your soul art” and I held on.

I smile every time I say, “Listen, Delicious” and I hope you will too. May the words be whatever you need – an invitation to delight, an encouraging embrace, a playful commandment, a secret message from a part of yourself that wants to be free.
