Join us for our Watercolor Practice series. Each week we’ll study and copy renowned artists to build your watercolor skills in color, technique and composition—then use what you’ve learned to create art that reflects your own style.
This week our featured artist is: Henry Ossawa Tanner.
Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859–1937) was an American painter celebrated for his religious and genre scenes rendered in moody, atmospheric color. He developed a distinctive palette of blues and greens to create quiet, contemplative light effects. His painting The Banjo Lesson remains one of the most significant works by an African American artist of his era.

Bring your own watercolor supplies—paints of your choice, a sketchbook, brushes, and watercolor paper. Working with your own materials helps you build confidence and continue painting at home.
Don’t have supplies yet? No problem. We have a few donated watercolor palettes, brushes, and paper available for use. Let me know ahead of time if you need supplies and I’ll have them ready for you.
